Before its new design was thought up and developed, the frontage of the Bristol Royal Infirmary was seen as unpleasant, in cleanliness and aesthetics, and in very poor condition.
University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust knew that the structure of the building needed improving, as well as the appearance.
A competition was run to come up with a new design concept and the winner was chosen; an architectural practice called Nieto Sobejano.
The decision was aided largely by public consultation;

The project was driven forward, but the public involvement created excitement and eagerness in a wider community.
The frontage is a remarkable modern skin over the top of the standing structure, made of powder-coated aluminium and glass, providing the hospital with an energy-efficient, maintenance-free new façade.
A new green buffer zone now sits between the hospital and the main road, making it more inviting and calming for visitors and patients, as it provides them with breathing space, as they arrive at the hospital.
The new design delivers;
Enhanced acoustic performanceBetter insulationImproved ventilationThermally-efficient windows
According to the designer, “by providing the building with a new façade, we were creating a new urban space.” – another of the benefits the new frontage has provided.
